VIP Welcome Reception Kicks-off Symposium

GOLD/GEWEL's advisors and directors warmly welcomed the corporate sponsors, speakers, panelists, and attendees from the U.S. at the Tokyo Midtown Hall and Conference in Roppongi.

Guests were inspired by speeches from James P. Zumwalt, Deputy Chief of Mission of the U.S. Embassy Tokyo and Merle Aiko Okawara, Chairman and CEO of JC Comsa Corporation.  Both spoke about the pioneering efforts of GOLD/GEWEL and the importance of promoting global leadership and diversity in Japan.

Thank you to everyone who participated in our symposium

GOLD held its second symposium at the Grande Prince Hotel Akasaka in Tokyo on October 21st.  This year we are especially excited because the event was co-hosted by Global Enhancement of Women's Executive Leadership (GEWEL), a sister organization of GOLD.

Over 250 women and men participated in the day-long symposium.  Following the full day of inspiring speakers and panelists, attendees signed a bridge-building poster to express their commitment; demonstrating a testament to the importance of a collaborative Japan-U.S. Leadership Initiative.

The symposium offered attendees a day of programs and keynote speakers addressing "bridge building" from three points of view: Leadership, Diversity and Culture, and Business/Economic Opportunities.

The symposium featured accomplished leaders in all areas of business, academia and non-profit. Speakers and panelists included: Atsutoshi Nishida, President and CEO, Toshiba Corporation; Maria Contreras-Sweet, Founder and Chairwoman, Promerica Bank; Howard Ross, Founder and Chief Learning Officer, Cook Ross, Inc.; Yukako Uchinaga, Chairman and CEO, Berlitz International, Inc.; Izumi Kobayashi, President and Representative Director, Merrill Lynch Japan Securities Co., Ltd.; Itaru Koeda, Executive Advisor and Honorary Chairman, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.; Anthony Carter, Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer, Johnson & Johnson; Marilyn Johnson, Vice President, IBM; Beverly Okada, Executive Vice President, Saatchi & Saatchi, New York; Michiko Achilles, Managing Executive Officer, Aozora Bank, Ltd.; Debbie Howard, President, Japan Market Resource Network; Renee Fraser, Ph.D., CEO, Fraser Communications; Kathy Matsui, Managing Director, Goldman Sachs Japan Co., Ltd.; and Tisa Jackson, Vice President, Union Bank of California.

Program participants, speakers, panelists and sponsors spent the day networking, sharing ideas, learning and growing.

New connections were made in Tokyo and leadership bridges across the Pacific are being built.

"21st Century Leadership Development" Workshop

The Leadership Development workshop was held from October 22 to October 23 at the Shinsei Bank Head Office in Tokyo.  The two-day intensive workshop was designed through collaboration with LEAP (Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics, Inc.).  GOLD/GEWEL developed this unique study tour program to address the specific values and needs of global leaders, focusing on Japanese and Asian American culture.

The 26 participants included management level women and men from the business and non-profit sectors and - two scholarship recipients from the Association for Women in Finance (AWF), a supporting organization of the symposium.

Linda Akutagawa, Senior Vice President, LEAP, opened the workshop, follow by a presentation that shared the facts about Japan and the country's current status.  Topics included included 21st Century Leaders: Surviving and Thriving in the Third Millennium," "Understanding Your Global Leadership Style," "Developing Multicultural & Global Leadership" and "Managing Your Career and Life."  On the first day, Glen Fukushima, President & CEO, Airbus Japan KK participated as a guest speaker, discussing "Leadership in the Age of Globalization."

At the conclusion of the workshop, the students shared their action plan to implement what they had learned to strengthen their leadership skills.

GOLD/GEWEL/LEAP congratulates the alumni for their achievements.
