Graduation

GOLD held an inaugural "21St Century Leadership Development Study Tour" from August 20 to August 24, 2007 in Los Angeles.  The three-and-a-half-day intensive leadership development workshop was designed through collaboration with LEAP (Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics, Inc.).  GOLD developed this unique study tour program to address the specific values and needs of global women leaders focusing on Japanese and Asian American culture.

Nine participants included management level business women, academia and MBA students/alumni from Japan, Canada and the United States.

The workshop was opened by Lisa Sueki, Vice President, LEAP and followed by a presentation titled "Japan - Issues and Trends" by Hiroko Tatebe that shared the facts and status of Japan.  Workshop topics included "The 21st Century Leaders: Surviving and Thriving in the Third Millennium," "Building Effective Teams," "Interpersonal Dynamics" and "Emotional Intelligence & Diversity" were conducted by Marilyn Tam, Former Top Executives of Fortune 500 Retail Companies;Diversity Management authority, Lee Gardenswartz, Ph.D., Partner, Gardenswartz & Rowe; and Linda Akutagawa, Vice President, LEAP.  Nancy Fredricks, the author of "Dancing on the Glass Ceiling" participated as a guest speaker and spoke about "Gender Dynamic: Men and Women's leadership Styles."

At the conclusion of the workshop, the students presented their action plan to implement what they had learned to strengthen their leadership skills.

Robin Johnson, Ph.D., President, EQuest, Inc., presented the graduation speech and congratulated the first GOLD alumni.

The remainder of the study tour included site visits to Los Angeles City Controller Laura Chick's office, Los Angeles City Hall, Southern California Edison (SCE) and Deloitte Consulting LLP (Deloitte).  At the SCE-hosted luncheon, SCE Senior Vice President, Human Resources, Diane Featherstone, shared her success story.  Keynote speaker, Mary Ann Takemoto, Ph.D. presented "Reflections on Lessons Learned on Cultural Journey."   The Deloitte Women's Initiatives (WIN) committee hosted the breakfast meeting and gave their program overview and background with statistics.  The students also had a chance to practice the networking skills that they learned at the workshop by meeting with business and community leaders at the Asian Business Association networking reception.

Participants rated the overall quality of the program 4.8 (average) out of 5.  Some comments included "The specific focus on Asian/Japanese women was truly valuable," "Great materials, presenters and guest speakers," and "Full of wonderful surprises!  What a great program."  According to Elaine Wong, "My vision, mission and goals are all clearer.  I can impact any process I decide.  I have more confidence and know I can do it."

"Women in the Workplace in Japan"

The article explains that for women in Japan, having to perform tea service while they plan their rise to the top is still part and parcel of their journey to success. While government initiatives are getting underway, they are still being adopted far too slowly in most corporations. As a result, Japan is losing some of its brightest minds to foreign competitors. While the government cries baby bust, both men and women are becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the positions allocated to them. Having positive role models is one of the most important places to start - for both men and women.  According to the article, "For four women professionals including Hiroko "no concrete ceiling has proved impermeable."

American Chamber of Commerce in Japan (ACCJ) Symposium on "Women in Financial Services"

The 2007 ACCJ symposium on "Women in Financial Services" was held at the Prince Park Tower Hotel in Tokyo on October 2.  This year's symposium followed last year's well-received events, and was attended by over 300 participants.

The full-day program featured a keynote speech from Diet Member, Keiko Inoguchi, two panel discussions, a sit-down lunch, workshops and a networking reception.

Hiroko Tatebe, GOLD Executive Director, participated in the panel discussion titled "Overcoming Challenges in the Workplace."  The panel was moderated by Anna Stephenson, Director of Operational Risk Management, Citigroup Japan.  In addition to Hiroko, Cheryl De Souza, Managing Director of Diversity and Inclusion, Asia, Lehman Brothers Asia; Mari Kano, Chief Manager, Securities Services Department, Asset Management and Administration Planning Division, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group; Kumiko Kinjo, Director of Internal Audit, Hartford Life Insurance K.K. participated in the panel.

The panelists shared their personal stories and challenges, and insights as to what professional women can do to help themselves progress in their careers. Hiroko suggested three key choices among many to overcome challenges; 1) Focusing on your strengths and developing your own leadership style, 2) Building a support network and 3) Take calculated risks.

GOLD looks forward to working with ACCJ to collaborate their efforts.
